MEDICAL SCRIBING

Professionals known as medical scribes record medical exchanges and record information during medical consultations, usually in real time. Before visits and procedures, they locate and prepare patient records for doctors. In order to accurately record notes, observations, orders, and other important information, they travel with doctors to rounds and visits. Orders for examinations, operations, and other treatments are compiled and processed by them. Since they do not provide medical care and typically have little to no direct patient contact, their duty is restricted to observation and documentation.

Medical scribes provide a variety of services, including:
  • Transcribing patient encounters and medical notes
  • Collecting and entering patient data
  • Updating patient records
  • Ordering laboratory tests, imaging studies, and other diagnostic testing
  • Assisting physicians with documentation in the electronic health record (EHR)
  • Maintaining patient confidentiality
  • Assisting with billing and coding
  • Communicating with other healthcare professionals
  • Assisting with medical research projects.
