MEDICAL SCRIBING
A medical scribe is a doctor's assistant who records the patient's family and medical histories, treatments, allergies, lab results, and any other information that the doctor dictates to them or that is pertinent to the patient's visit.
Roles and Responsibilities of a medical scribe:
1. Record patient information accurately and completely in an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system: The medical scribe must ensure that all the information recorded in the EHR is accurate, complete and up-to-date. This includes medical history, physical examination findings, laboratory results, and other relevant information.
2. Assist the physician during the patient’s visit: The medical scribe should be able to anticipate the physician’s needs and be ready to assist with any tasks that need to be completed. This may include retrieving medical records, running diagnostic tests, entering orders, and helping with referrals.
3. Ensure timely completion of medical records: Medical scribes should ensure that all medical records are completed in a timely manner and are compliant with relevant laws, regulations, and standards.
4. Monitor patient flow: Medical scribes should be aware of the patient flow and help to ensure that the patient’s visit runs smoothly.
5. Provide support to other medical staff: Medical scribes should be able to provide support to other medical staff, such as nurses and medical assistants, when needed.
6. Maintain professionalism and confidentiality: Medical scribes should always maintain a professional attitude and respect patient confidentiality.
