MEDICAL SCRIBING
A medical scribe is a doctor's personal assistant who has been trained to record doctor-patient interactions during examinations. A medical scribe records patient visits into an electronic health record (EHR) in real time, as directed by a doctor, and uses the EHR to track the patient's progress.
- The concerns surrounding the documentation, such as whether symptoms or histories should be included or excluded from the document, must also be understood by the scribe.
- A scribe must be knowledgeable with and trained in coding and billing regulations when writing out a medical chart.
- They must provide concise information so that a doctor can quickly review the specifics throughout their busy shift, including completing out the process, needing additional checks, and allocating time for vital care.
- A scribe needs to be aware that strong communication with other medical professionals, such as nurses, pharmacists, paramedics, and others, is essential to providing effective patient care.
